Gaffer / Lighting Technician

Throughout my time on the short film ‘Painfully Synced’, I worked closely with the Cinematographer to achieve the desired look. This particular film provided me with the opportunity to improve my problem solving skills, gain a better understanding of on-the-go lighting and be acutely aware of safety on set. Fortunately I had a helpful team that was able to help me with setting up and coming up with solutions to issues.

Skills

Lighting Setups

  • Nanlux 1200b + Fresnel + Diffuser Sheet

    Aimed to achieve a natural sunlight look to have more control over the scene (Safety with high wattage and weight was needed).

  • Forza 720B + Amaran F22C + Floppy + Diffuser

    Create office light with a cooler temperature - There were lots of cables and C-stands involved which required notifying the crew and cable management.

  • Amaran F22C + Diffuser + Temporary blockage of light utilising trashbags

    Seperated from any regular walkway during filming and therefore safe.

  • RCD Boxes

    They were used for high wattage lights to not trip circuits.

  • Amaran F22C + C stand

    Tricky smaller situations were involved throughout the film, therefore utilising c stands and flexible lights.

  • Reviewing Footage

    Working closely with the cinematographer, I was able to see the shots without needing to be behind the camera.

    Working on setups during free-time in between shots for efficiency (preemptively setting up lights needed)

    Using both diffusion and light control grid to control the lights

    Making sure the lights create the desired shot, are consistent and out of shot.

    Close to actor, hence needed a briefing and shouting ‘Striking’ when turning on (Involved with all lights but most important here)
